Great framework, great tone

I found Tensile Trading to be a refreshing read from an honest trader(s) who makes his(their) living being active in the markets. Too often, investment and trading books are written in an academic or impersonal tone that sells some sort of easy-sounding, black box trading system. It sounds great and sells books but it often leaves you feeling a little disappointed. On the other side of the spectrum, Tensile Trading is written in an engaging, practical and down to earth voice.

I am a amply experienced trader so I did not learn a lot of new information about markets but I absolutely loved the framework that was presented. It is sort of like looking over the shoulder of a seasoned practitioner to see how you can improve your own process. I would pass this book along to novice and veteran alike.

The Playbook for trading success

The investment world is filled with an insane amount of information and opinions. As an individual investor, I find it overwhelming to understand how to formulate a proper strategy to win in the market. Fortunately, I found Tensile Trading that outlines the mechanics and psychology of successful investment planning. Tensile Trading doesn't sell you the end zone dance but instead hands you the playbook from which you can develop an investment framework so you're not wandering lost on the playing field. Gatis and Grayson eliminate the noise and lay out the necessary steps and routines of how to become a profitable investor. I am grateful to have found an investment book that is truly written with the sole purpose of passing on a legacy of prosperity for future traders.

High Quality Systematic Investment Approach

This is a unique book from multiple perspectives. Firstly, it is written by father and son teams who both have trading experience. Gatis was a full-time trader/investor since 1989 and a CMT. He began teaching post college level course since 2000 and this book is based on that course curriculum. His son Grayson began trading at age 18, and after college started working for [...] since 2012. The authors’ goal was to provide investors with the knowledge and understanding to do more things right than wrong when dealing with investing.

The book provides a comprehensive strategic ten stage roadmap of investing that is dubbed the “Tensile Trading” method. This method has been used by Gatis for over 25 years. One chapter is devoted to each of these stages. At the end of each chapter there is a bullet point summary of the key points presented.

The advice and investing approach presented in the book is presented in an unfiltered and brutally honest manner from the standpoint of two independent investors. The authors strive to help investors increase the odds of making consistent profits in the market by using their 10-step methodology. They believe that the key to successful investing is good preparation before the first trade is made.

They believe in listening to what it is communicating, as well as setting appropriate stops to limit risk. They also believe that the four key elements of profitable trading consist of planning, using a trading system, executing properly, and following their beliefs. Also, maintaining a trading journal is crucial. In additions, investors need to determine the correlation coefficient between each of their holdings to determine their level of diversification.

The authors have found that investing in the strongest industries and sectors works out well, instead of investing in individual stocks. Whether you speak Spanish or are trying to master a foreign language (like me) these books are wonderful! For having read both the Spanish and English versions, I can say that this translation does a wonderful job of preserving the original integrity and wit of this series.

Bien pero hace falta mejorar la traducci�n

Mi hija de 7 a�os est� completamente obsesionada con esta serie de libros. No es gran literatura pero entretiene con su drama. Tengo algunas observaciones sobre la traducci�n de esta serie al castellano. Primero fue hecho por y supongo para espa�oles, todo con la forma de conjugaci�n de “vosotros,” la cual no se emplea en Am�rica Latina. La verdad cansa leer el texto as� a mi hija. Sin querer ofender al estimado pueblo espa�ol, pero me parece il�gico y hasta ofensiva que haya decidido emplear una traducci�n regionalista, con formas utilizadas por apenas 46 millones de espa�oles, frente a 625 millones de Latino Americanos que no hablan de vosotros sab�is. �Qu�, no? Tambi�n el vocabulario es todo “espa�ol”. Anoche fue “corredor de fincas” que me hizo pensar en ganado. Obviamente es el t�rmino espa�ol para un “agente de ventas de propiedades inmuebles” o alguna variante del l�xico local (“agente de finca ra�z” en Colombia). Tengo que hacer doble trabajo de explicaci�n para mi hija. Cansa.

Por otro lado la traducci�n es demasiada apegada al ingl�s, que resulta en frases torpes y desnaturalizadas. Falta un buen pulido por un corrector hispanoparlante para acomodar el texto. Lamentablemente, la mayor�a de las traducciones del ingl�s al espa�ol de literatura infantil y juvenil peca del mismo problema. Es un insulto a los latinos porque refleja una falta de respeto. Quieren su plata pero no quieren poner el presupuesto y la atenci�n necesarios para una buena traducci�n.

Por otro lado, vivimos en Estados Unidos y es sumamente dif�cil conseguir literatura juvenil en espa�ol que no sea una traducci�n. M�s que eso, sin embargo, lamento que no existe una cultura de escritores para j�venes en Am�rica Latina. Apenas existe literatura aut�ctona para ni�os, menos a�n una juvenil. Los pocos libros para ni�os son dominados por basura gringa mal traducida. Es una l�stima que no existen libros de aventuras juveniles en Am�rica Latina.

Si alguien puede ofrecer alguna sugerencia para buena literatura juvenil en espa�ol, se lo agradecer�a.

Creative and Informative

After browsing through bunch of books on Whirligigs at the local library we decided to get our own copy. This book is great with loads of useful information and pictures. The author is very skilled and creative. However, this might not be a good total beginner book. My boy friend and I have made quite a few whirli-birds (goose, duck, cardinal, etc.) but we have yet made any particular ones from this book as they are more detailed and time consuming... We look forward to try them when we get more free time.

Good for ideas & techiques

I've started building whirligigs as a new hobby. For the most part, I'm a beginner, but I do have a mechanical background. This book does a very good job with the details of how to build common parts as well as the individual whirligigs themselves. The drawings and color photos are very detailed and provide a lot of information that can be difficult to express in words. The author seems genuinely interested in sharing his craft with others who want to build, and not merely showcasing his own work. I think that this book is more or less geared toward the beginning to mid-range hobbyist- it does not have any of the simple arm-waving whirligigs found in many beginner books, but at the same time it doesn't offer much in the terms of more-complex mechanisms. That is not to say that all of these projects are easy to build- it just means that there is not much use of more complex mechanisms to make the whirligig puppets do more complex movements. I especially found that the author's listing sources for supplies is extremely helpful.

I really enjoyed this book for the concepts, techiques, and ideas that it has provided me with. One thing I found to be a little weak was the subject matter. The project it suggests to be built first will not hold the interest of most people; the author is a dentist, so a whirligig of a smiling tooth brushing itself makes for a great deal of enjoyment for himself and his patients. But it really wasn't anything I had any interest in building. I found that many of the projects in this book really weren't my 'cup of tea', as many were more modern, such as space-oriented themes and such. I would have preferred more traditional subject matter, such as a characters performing chores or doing something humorous.

Another thing I was a little disappointed with is that the author uses a variety of materials to build his whirligigs from. I had envisioned primarially working with wood, but the author uses a lot of sheet metal, and even some plaster. I also did not care for the author's painting techniques, although that is the easiest aspect to overcome, because painting alone does not require discovering different ways of building to work around.

This book was EXCELLENT for providing the basic concepts and construction techniques. And if you are someone who can carry the knowledge learned here into projects of your own, then I would definitely recommend this book. It is well worth the small investment. If you are looking for a set of plans for every project you intend to build, then this may not be the book for you, especially if you are looking to make more traditional folk-art pieces.

When you complete one of these crosswords (without using a dictionary or cheating!) you really feel like you have accomplished something. I love it when I complete a puzzle that I didn't even start filling in until about clue #20! You can't go wrong with Will Shortz.

Engrossing case studies

I am just starting out as a mediator and have found this book both inspiring and practically helpful. Krivis's case studies are extremely specific and just long enough to give you the story, but not so long that you wonder when he's going to get to the point. His stories demonstrate a mixture of mediation approaches--transformative, facilitative, and directive. I think I'll read it again after I get a few more mediations under my belt.

A helpful guide for both mediators and lawyers

Jeffrey Krivis has mediated thousands of cases in practically every imaginable legal area. A former trial attorney, he has been a successful mediator for over 15 years, and has served as the president of the International Academy of Mediators and the Southern California Mediation Association. He has taught various courses and workshops on mediation and dispute resolution and in 1993 he received the Dispute Resolution Lawyer of the Year Award. Improvisational Negotiation takes the unusual approach of showing by example how mediation can help parties reach mutually beneficial solutions. This book forgoes any long-winded discussions of philosophy or the rigid use of a formulaic approach to conflict resolution. Instead, Krivis has filled this book with thirty stories - mostly taken from his own experience. He succinctly explains the disputes in a few pages and then shows how a mediator uses a variety of tools and skills to bring the parties together to settle their conflicts before they end up in the courtroom.

After each case is brought to a conclusion, Krivis summarizes the keys to resolving the negotiations in a short section called "What Happened?" He then concludes with a section called "What Strategies Can We Learn?" where he briefly lists the approaches taken that led to a successful resolution. This is a very entertaining way to show how various approaches are often needed to bring divergent positions to a common ground.

Krivis organizes the stories into sections dealing with:

· Rebuilding Communication Breakdowns and Healing Broken Relationships;

· Financial Negotiations and Using Information for a Better Deal;

· Useful and Proven Techniques For Difficult Technical Negotiations; and

· Advanced Techniques for Negotiations that are Locked Down.

Improvisational Negotiation is filled with entertaining stories and helpful techniques used to bring parties together. Krivis understands that no two cases are alike and that no two mediators work in the same way. He expects that these stories will provide a broad guideline to various approaches that

mediators can use in their practice. He recognizes that "mediators need to change their approach not only from case to case but also within the same case." He writes in the introduction that he hopes "the stories in this book encourage you to follow a similar path: to search the length and width of the field, anticipating the direction of the case, constantly maneuvering the parties toward the deal."

This book is filled with great examples of creative and successful mediations - along with an analysis of the techniques used to bring the parties together. Krivis clearly knows his stuff. Mediators and lawyers will find in this book many examples of ways to solve problems that at first blush appear to be nearly impossible. My only criticism of the book is that some of the stories presented point to a fairly obvious solution. Others involve lawyers allowing their clients to engage in somewhat questionable conduct - such as talking privately with the opposing lawyer with only the mediator present, or disclosing information to opposing counsel that might expose the client to even more liability.

On the whole, however, this book excels at showing just how effective mediation can be when done with skill and finesse.
