From the outside, they're simply a group of urban teenagers. But from the inside, they're some of the most complex people you'll ever meet. There's Eric, fiercely protective of his brother Mickey-but he has a secret that holds together his past and future. Sonia, struggling to live the life of a good Muslim girl in a foreign America. Gingerbread and Keisha, who fall in love despite themselves. Life Is Funny strips away the defenses of one group of teenagers living today, right now-and shows their unbearably real lives.
"First novelist Frank breaks new ground with a realistic, lyrical novel about eleven teens in Brooklyn now . . . Their talk is painful, rough, sexy, funny, fearful, furious, gentle. Each chapter, each vignette within a chapter, builds to its own climax, and the stories weave together to surprise you." (Booklist, starred review)
"An astounding first effort." (Kirkus Reviews, pointer review)

Amazon.com Review
"'He's got poetry,' I go, all choky. 'He's got mad poetry.'" With these words from China about her crush Eric, debut author E.R. Frank proves her fresh knowledge of millennial teenspeak. In Life Is Funny, there is no dated slang, only the ripe hip-hop dialogue heard on subway cars and street corners. Frank's ear is perfect as she details the lives and loves of 11 Brooklyn teens on the cusp of adulthood. Though the stories are gritty, for every slam there is a triumph. Tough-talking Monique, who is pregnant by her abusive ex-boyfriend, finds real peace with Hector, a dreamy-eyed nurse at the prenatal clinic who knows that love is the only medicine that will cure her terminal anger. Rich-boy Drew rejects all the material possessions that his father can buy him when he finally makes the 911 call that saves his mother from another beating at his father's hands. There's also Grace, whose movie-star looks can't save her from her alcoholic mom's rages, and Eric, who has lost the ability to love anyone or anything except his little brother Mickey. Sonia feels the friction of being a good Muslim girl in an intolerant public school, and Ebony cuts herself to forget how much she misses having a father in her life.
Frank has penned a high-intensity, multicultural, multidimensional teen reading experience that will challenge and change those who open it. These are real teens in real time. Be prepared for them to rock your world. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert
From Publishers Weekly
"Eleven kids with distinct voices and individual struggles narrate this impressive debut novel, yet each of the interlocking stories springs to life with tender details," said PW in a starred review. Ages 14-up.
From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-Eleven solo voices blend to create a choral piece of writing that sings of coming-of-age in a multiracial Brooklyn community. Spanning seven years, the lives of China, Keisha, Sonia, Drew, Grace, Monique, Eric, Molly, Gingerbread, Ebony, and Linnette intersect, overlap, and intertwine as each one struggles to find meaning in the world around them. Each chapter is a slice of one teen's life, resonating with pain and joy. Daily confrontations with racism and drugs are compounded by family dysfunction. Collectively, the young people cope with home lives damaged by parental alcoholism, crack addiction, molestation, abandonment, violence, divorce, and death. As their voices blend, the narrators form a frighteningly realistic view of growing up in America. Hopeful and fresh, they reach out to one another and into themselves to find the strength to overcome what life has dealt them. The characters are skillfully and compassionately wrought, though some of the situations that bring them together are contrived, and the ending defies closure. Yet, when the final page is turned, these robust voices are not silenced. They are angry, sorrowful, confused, and contemplative, and their language is rough and raw. They are boisterous and full of laughter, because after all is said and done, life is funny, isn't it?-Alice Casey Smith, Sayreville Public Schools, Parlin, NJ

I am a professional social worker and I work in NYC schools. This book was masterfully accurate. It was tough and real, and most impressively, full of hope. These characters learn that they can trust themselves, trust eachother and reach for the stars. Everyone should read this book. Everyone will love this book.

Wonderful
By V. Ludas
I read this book for the second time last night (the first time I read it I was up til 2am) and it made me teary again. The people are completely lifelike, and I feel as if I know them. I would love to see a sequel with these or other kids, written only by E.R. Frank. Read this book, no matter how old you are. I'm bringing this with me when I go back to college, that's all I can say.
(and, of course, being from Montclair makes it all that much cooler)

it'll change your life, i promise
By A Customer
My mom bought me this book. Being a 15 year old who doesn't always want to hear what my mother has to say, I didn't want to read it. I picked it up- and I fell in love. Every single page has you feeling a different emotion, every single character leaves a little memory of them you will never forget. This book is so real, so coming-at-you that no one will be able to put it down. For me, this book was my first step to the reality out there, so ate it all up. Actually its hard to tell what ate who; I either ate the book up or it ate me, for I was so absorbed in it I might as well have lived the characters' lives right along side them. This is truly my favorite out of all the many, many, MANY books that i have ever read. Once you pick it up, there is no turning back... and it will change you.
