This first authoritative expose of the 1958-1962 famine prompted by China's collectivization plan, "The Great Leap Forward," comes at a time when the cult of Mao is alive and well inside China, and while agents of Chinese influence are able to arrange audiences with a President. Via his painstaking research and reporting that included two treks through interior Chinese provinces, Becker tells how the famine occurred because ill-trained peasants were forced to undertake a gigantic and centralized industrial and agricultural expansion. The new factories, canals, and irrigation systems failed spectacularly, and in contrast to propaganda boasts of having economically outstripped the U.S., when in reality the populace was driven by starvation to cannibalism, slavery, and madness.

Becker, Beijing Bureau Chief for the South China Morning Post, sees the 1958-62 famine, even more than the Cultural Revolution that followed it, as China's greatest trauma of the century. Population statistics made public since 1979 reveal that at least 30 million people starved to death in the wake of Mao's Great Leap Forward. Although Becker concedes that the American press (especially Joseph Alsop) reported the famine with accuracy, he notes that other Western "foreign experts" who admired Mao, such as Edgar Snow, Rewi Alley, and Anna Louise Strong, remained silent or played down its severity. The tragedy could have been averted, Becker concludes, after the first year if Mao's senior advisers had dared to confront him. Unlike such academic works as Dali L. Yang's Calamity and Reform in China (Stanford Univ., 1996), this work presupposes little knowledge of communism and China; Becker's strength is his anecdotal, journalistic style. Many claim that death has resulted from every attempt to communize agriculture and perhaps on the largest scale during China's disastrous "Great Leap Forward." But no one knows how many starved to death there in the years 1958^-62--demographers place the lower limit at 30 million. The Communist government seemingly concealed the catastrophe from the outside world, abetted by the few Western visitors to the country (such as France's Mitterand), who declared there was no famine. Becker, a veteran East Asia correspondent for British publications, reconstructs the terrible event using interviews of survivors, whose ordeal he details in graphic chapters, describing hunger and cannibalism. According to Becker, unlike most famines in Chinese history, Mao's political famine beset the entire country, which induced opposition to the leader's fanaticism from more realistic leaders such as Liu Shao-ch'i and Teng Hsiao-p'ing, with whom Mao later settled scores in the Cultural Revolution. A subject still officially muted in China, the famine as Becker has investigated it becomes a less obscure chapter in the country's Communist history. Gilbert Taylor

Read it and weep

I immediately recognized the photo on the cover of Hungry Ghosts, a boy and two women (one carrying a baby) pulling a plow. When I first came to Taiwan, a few days after Lin Biao died and a few weeks before Nixon visited Mao, the government here frequently published this photo as evidence of how wrong things had gone in the PRC. Pooh, I thought, things can't possibly be as bad as they said. For proof I looked to the glowing reports published by the first American reporters to visit: one even brought along her father, who had been a missionary, and could speak some Chinese.
Years after Mao died, when the PRC started opening up, it became evident that the KMT had vastly understated its case, perhaps to avoid panic here. Hungry Ghosts documents a tragedy that the world hardly noted.

I would be the last to claim expertise on PRC government affairs, but one reason I believe Hungry Ghosts is credible is that detail after detail meshes with bits and pieces I had picked up over the years, unaware of the extent of the disaster.
Example: Becker mentions the dams peasants had to build. In the early 1980s, Mr Wei, from a family of tea farmers in Fujian, told me why his relatives starved:"We were told that tea is decadent and capitalistic. We were ordered to tear out all the tea trees and plant grain. Our family has farmed those hills for generation after generation. We know the soil, we know the climate, and we know that grain cannot grow there. We were ordered to build a dam. We didn't know how, so we asked the cadres. They said,'Ask an old farmer.' We had no choice, so a couple old farmers got together and planned a dam, even though they had never seen one, either. We toiled and toiled. Since we were producing no crops, we had little to eat. Finally, our dam was finished. As soon as we let the water flow, it washed away the dam. We asked the cadres what to do. They said, 'Grow tea.' But we couldn't harvest tea for several years. For three years, we had nothing to eat. Many of my relatives starved." Anybody who reads Hungry Ghosts will recognize the elements in this story. For me, practically the whole book reads like this, corroborating things I had seen and heard over the years.
Mr Becker speaks with authority on modern China, but his ancient history is weak. The first chapter opens with "an inscription on a Shang tomb." I have never heard of an inscription on a Shang tomb. In, yes; on, no. If the inscription is translated correctly, it is hardly typical of early Chinese thought (unless the 'Emperor' refers to the god Di). Becker makes some outlandish comments about Confucianism. Okay, big deal, his book is about modern, not ancient China. His explanation that the Cultural Revolution was a response dealing with the GLF makes sense of an otherwise senseless convulsion.
Dear reader, this is a heart-breaking book. May you and I never suffer as those poor people suffered. May such times never come again.

Nice Job, Excellent Read

I found this book well-written, well-organized, and moving. It's interesting to see how many Chinese readers consider it ethnocentric and anti-Chinese. I didn't take it that way at all -- Mao's sort of madness is all-too-universal in human history, and the story left me with a sense of great admiration for the Chinese people who somehow suffered through this period. Becker is also very careful to point out that the real roots of the disaster were not in China but in Mao's enthusiasm for actions of Stalin and the writings of Marx.
And if the portions on Mao sometimes read like a bio of Idi Amin, well, I'd consider that appropriate. He was a murderous, vainglorious sociopath. The fact that he was right about the terrible crimes of the Western powers against China neither changes nor justifies a thing.
Anyway, a very nicely written and fascinating account that left me wanting to learn more about both ancient and modern Chinese history.

The greatest peacetime disaster of the 20th century

A horrifying and well-researched history of how Mao's "Great
Leap Forward" became the worst famine in history, killing
perhaps 30 million Chinese (1958 - 1960) -- it appears
unlikely an exact fatality figure will ever be known. Which
adds to the horror, I think, that millions of people, with hopes
and dreams like our own, could vanish without leaving
a trace, even a number, in the world outside their homes.
Not to mention uncounted millions of children whose lives
were blighted by brain-damage from malnutrition....

FWIW, Jasper concludes that Mao's Great Famine was more
omission than commission (in contrast to Stalin's): Mao's
absurd ideas of backyard industrialization, plus turning
loose the Red Guards chaos, ruined the harvests. Then
Communist Party officials simply denied the problem, and
concocted elaborate coverups -- even painting the tree
trunks to hide that the bark had been eaten by starving
people -- when Mao or senior officials were to visit famine
areas. And a smiling-peasants "Big Lie" for foreigners,
which worked for years.

It's a remarkable, and depressing, account. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Wally Dyba is a tenured faculty member in the School of Kinesiology and Health Science at York University, where he teaches in the Coaching Certificate Program. One of the most successful coaches in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) volleyball, he has coached the Lions to six OUA titles and a bronze medal at the Canadian University Championships.

Dyba has been involved in volleyball at several levels. He has coached numerous age and calibre division teams to provincial championships and national medals. A former Ontario provincial team head coach, Wally has been a guest coach with the Canadian men’s national team on numerous occasions. He was also selected as head coach of the Canadian World University Games men’s beach volleyball teams in 2004.

A leader in coaching development, Wally is a Level 3 Theory and Technical course conductor and serves as director of the York University volleyball seminars, which offer technical certification in the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).

Solid resource for drill/game ideas

This is basically a volleyball drills and games manual. There's a bit more to the book, but when you boil things down it's a pretty straightforward compilation of ideas for things volleyball coaches can incorporate into their training sessions.

The book actually starts off with a pair of chapters which look like contributed essays from a second author. They are listed as "Parts", but effectively they act as chapters. The first is Effective Coaching Methods which focuses on teaching and learning. The second is The Coach as Motivator, which has a pretty obvious focus. Both chapters are relatively short - as I say, more like essays.

Part III is an interesting feature of the book in the form of a chapter which looks at the very foundational elements of volleyball in some detail. This is not a common inclusion in most coaching books, as they tend to assume a certain minimal level of play and/or understanding. The addition of this section could make this book particularly useful for those working with beginners.

The next couple sections (IV and V) are where the games and drills really start coming thick and fast. All major skills are covered, along with various types of game situations. There's even a section on circuit training for those after some conditioning ideas.

One thing which did stand out to me was some different terminology than what I've seen/heard before. An example that really jumped out at me was "volley pass". This is what I have most often heard referred to as an overhead pass - taking a first-ball contact with your hands. The author is a Canadian, so perhaps this is a reflection of common phraseology there. The book does have a bit of an "old school" vibe to it, however, despite only being published in 2005.

There is some discussion of the technical execution of individual skills, though it's not a major focus. I disagreed with things here or there in that respect, but that is often the case when coaches get to talking technique. The reader should take from it what makes sense to them - as it always recommended.

I won't put Incredible Volleyball Lead-Up Games and Drills at the top of my recommended reading list, but for a volleyball coach looking for some drill and/or game ideas, or one looking for help teaching the very basics of the game, it could come in handy.

Great resource for the modeler

This is a wonderful picture book depicting the Enterprise as she appeared after her 1980 refit. Anyone building the 1985 Tamyia 1/350th scale model if the Enterprise will need this book to make an accurate depiction of the ship. Since the book was published in the mid 1980's, there is, of course, nothing about the second 25 years of the ships history in this volume. This is a book aimed at model builders and Enterprise enthusiasts.

Excellent, but apparently a reprint

I agree with the earlier review, in that the book is full of excellent photographs of the Big E. However, I purchased it within the last month from Squadron, and it is a reprint. I was disappointed to find no information at all on the current configuration of CVN-65. My fault for assuming D&S V. 39 was current, but if you are looking for anything pre '91 on the Enterprise, this book is for you.

This book is the best source for the modeller! You will find tons of very interesting photos, reviews about existing kits, and best of all, colour-photos! A must-have article! I am still searching a copy!

About the Author

Robert Reid, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He has done extensive work nationally and internationally on children with ADHD and on cognitive strategy instruction. He has also conducted research with youth in residential settings and in out-of-home care. Dr. Reid has published over 100 articles and book chapters as well as the coauthored ADHD Rating Scale–IV, which is now used in seven countries, and presents at national and international conferences. He is a recipient of the Special Education Student Research Award from the American Educational Research Association and the Jeannie P. Baliles Child Mental Health Research Award from the Virginia Treatment Center for Children. Dr. Reid currently serves on the editorial boards of five journals and actively reviews for a number of others.�Joseph Johnson, PhD, is Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Studies at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. Prior to earning his doctorate in special education, he taught in public secondary schools for over 13 years, including 6 years as a special education teacher in both resource and cotaught classrooms. His interests include cognitive strategy instruction and academic interventions for adolescents with ADHD.

Enjoyable & Informative for Every Reader

I read this book from cover to cover as part of a Special Ed course on the educational implications of ADHD. The thing that surprised me most about this textbook is that it was actually very enjoyable to read. Reading this book is similar to attending a lecture that is presented in such a way that one can easily remember even the most complex concepts that were covered, even without having had to take extensive notes. I recommend this book to general educators, special educators, families of children with ADHD, and people with ADHD. Everyone will benefit from the information included, especially the multitude of practical advice for effective teaching.

Jason is cocky and quite full of himself, "like hanging a sock on the door knob when you’re horny and looking for a little of this.” He gestured down his body." When it comes to Aylee he's quite the charmer, "Jason’s eyes got dark and he pulled me close. “I’ve got a ride for you right here,” he rolled his hips into mine, “if you want to hop on." Jason was just a sexy guy, "lowering his hands to my a**, he squeezed and pushed his arousal into me. “Don’t worry, I know how I’m going to keep you occupied." I loved this book it was different and I loved how Leslie brings her characters to life

5 star read and I can't wait for more

I don't think I have the words to describe how good No Limit is. Jason and Aylee are perfect together and the chemistry and sizzling!! Alpha can be describes in so many ways but when these two get together, alpha is taken to another level.

Jason is someone who hasn't found himself of his better half. When he meets Aylee it is something about her that brings the real him out. Since he is an undercover agent, it is hard to really have a life and this job really has him at his wits end. He is protective of Aylee before he even realizes it and the attraction is undeniable.

Aylee is a FBI agent who grew up sooner that she needed to. She has a side to her that has made her the woman that she is. She's not afraid, she's ruthless when she needs to be and she gets what she wants. The mission at hand is dangerous but she feels she has to do this for the victims and I also think she has to do this for herself.

Jason and Aylee face a lot of drama, which makes the book even better because the drama is mostly them not getting along. They play around and get to business when they need to. Aylee is a risk taker but she proves that not only is she gorgeous but she is also smart and that is needed in the game that is being played.

There were so many twists and turns with No Limit. So what do I think of the characters. Well Jason is hot!! He is strong willed which may not be the best things for him. He loves hard and at times he throws "temper tantrums" when he can't get his way. Jason's background is different and seeing all of the things he has seen puts him in a different category. I love Aylee. She is strong. She doesn't take crap from anyone and she has her head on straight. The mission is important to both of them for different reasons.

L.P. Dover can do NO wrong with this upcoming series. I can't wait to get more. I thought the Gloves Off series was excellent and maybe, just maybe, we'll see some of those guys n this series. This series is going to be fantastic!!

Sexy and dangerous new leading man, yummy!

No Limit is about this undercover cop, Jason, working a case in Las Vegas, where prostitutes are popping up dead all over the city. Getting nowhere fast, Jason is surprised and pissed that the FBI is moving in on his game with Special Agent Aylee McFadden. Jason, not used to working with a partner for a while, and her presence making him feel inadequate, hates Aylee right off the bat! Aylee is open minded and willing to work with Jason until he shows his bad side to her!

Jason has gotten the case list down to a few suspects, four business men that play high stakes poker games at the casino together. Now that Aylee has joined the team, she can help by posing as a prostitute accompanying Jason during his visit to sin city, and try and get close to the sleazeballs, Drake, Chazz, Mark and the big kahuna Mr. Randall.

The story was pretty serious, but not extremely intense. Only a few moments in the book were intense, but as a whole I didn't feel on edge constantly. The basis for the story was strong and kept my attention, and the writing held me to the pages. The dialogue was outstanding! Jason and Aylee were two screwed up people that were able to do what they had to in order to solve this case. During the investigation, Jason realized early on that in order to be able to trust one another with their lives, they had to open up and share their hurtful pasts with each other.

The character development was pretty detailed, I mean it had to be to suit the story. When Aylee was telling Jason her story, Niagara Falls... I think Jason even shed a tear during that part! Once I heard Jason's story, I totally understood why he was the way he was, and instead of pissing me, and Aylee off, it made him more endearing. The intense moments were scary because Aylee's life was on the line each time, and Jason couldn't do anything, it was so frustrating and scary! The unlikely friendships that developed were a nice touch, which is what made the ending so damn awesome, and yes, more crying...

I absolutely loved the story, the sexual build up, the new budding romance, and the scary action-packed scenes with the suspects. I am a new reader of LP's and now she has a new and enthused fan!

Great intro to Indonesia for Aussies

The Australian author has been a resident of Indonesia for about 20 years, and structures his introduction to Indonesia around the narrative of a journey he undertook across Kalimantan some 15 years ago - an engaging and informative read - highly recommended.

I had the pleasure of launching this book, on behalf of The Lombok Writers Guild, for Mark in Lombok in October. This is what I said:

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to a cultural event that has sprouted from our very own community here in Lombok. Tonight we are launching two Crazy Little Heavens: the third launch for the book and a soft launch for the CD with the same name.

When Mark asked me to officially launch them I accepted immediately. Some would say I accepted because I like the sound of my own voice and it's hard to shut me up when I am given a microphone. Others would say I accepted because I'd be in such esteemed company as the Australian Ambassador, Greg Moriarty, and one of Australia's treasured journalists and writers, Tim Bowden who both have already launched 'Crazy Little Heaven' in Jakarta and Hobart, to sell out audiences. Both of these reasons are patently not true.

The reason is that writing a memoir (or any book) is not an individual effort. Every book, even those assigned to individual authors, is written with a team. I have written three books myself and have a great debt of gratitude to those who helped me, including Mark.

I agreed to help launch 'Crazy Little Heaven' because I feel I was part of Mark's team. One day about two years ago Mark casually mentioned to me that he'd written some stories about a trans-Kalimantan trip he'd completed last century. Equally as casually I asked if I could read them and Mark lent me a wad of scrappy pages, perhaps 50000 words. I read them and the writer in me turned green - Mark has a turn of phrase and a descriptive ability which can take you into a scene to smell the flowers, and feel the rain trickling down your neck. I thought, when I grow up, I want to be able to write as well as Mark does. It reminded me of a book that I read many years ago about Peter Matthiessen's unforgettable spiritual journey through the Himalayas called 'The Snow Leopard'. I was equally as enthralled by Mark's story and thrilled at his skill with language.

I returned the manuscript to him with some effusive language of support. It turned out that Mark was pretty chuffed. His ego puffed out and he took the encouragement and ran with it. Suddenly the fifty thousand words mushroomed into more than 300,000. He wrote like a man possessed and the tome we have here is the result of this fevered madman whose story was so compelling it burst from him like the froth from a shaken soda can.

So I am privileged to have been a part of the early support team in the process of this book. Mark had quite an extended team - readers, editors, critical friends, etc and every one of them played a role. He even needed help with his title but was able to fend off my insistence on my far superior name for this book -'The Orang-utan and the Eggman' - and settled for 'Crazy Little Heaven'.

Why though, does this fever bite some of us so hard that we're up at four am to write for months at a time? The actor David Niven, in his autobiography 'The Moon is a Balloon', started with a near apology, saying that there is little more egotistical than writing a memoir. I should know - my own memoir titled 'Turn Left at the Devil Tree' will be released next week and I agree it is partly an ego thing. But it's more than that. People who think they have a story to tell about their experiences value those experiences and feel a kind of debt to them and the people involved and feel that they deserve being written - and if no one else will write them down then it's the job of people like Mark, myself, or anyone else here tonight to do the writing.

I'll give you an example, when writing 'Turn Left at the Devil Tree', I asked the honourable Ted Egan AO, a folk hero, a retired Northern Territory Administrator, entertainer, writer, singer and bushman, now 83 and powered by a pacemaker and pausing after just completing his PhD thesis, to write a foreword to my text. Ted was one of the first Europeans to enter the parts of Arnhem Land where I lived in the 1990s, and in fact he, in 1958, was one of the founders of the town I lived in.

In conversations before his foreword arrived Ted told me stories about his time in Arnhem Land. But surprisingly his foreword, when it was finished, left out some of his best stories.

The people he told me about are long dead. Ted is 83! I suggested to him that if he didn't write those stories now they'd be lost forever to everyone. He'd done me a great favour in writing what he did and I felt bad saying `but there's more to tell' but really it may be the last chance.

Memoir writers want to record their particular slice of history. Mark and his friends were in Kalimantan in the early 1990s. Their experiences will never be repeated by anyone. If Mark hadn't written them down, they would have been lost. This is the way of history - most is lost but each and every event is a paragraph in a giant never-ending tale. Mark has written his paragraph well.

Mark's 'Crazy Little Heaven' firstly is a memoir, secondly a travel story of an adventurous journey across Kalimantan powered by a diet of rice and eggs, and thirdly it is Mark's reflection, after several decades of living here, on Indonesia's recent history.

Mark has the reader immersed in the primeval jungle of Kalimantan where the continuing rape of mother nature goes on unchecked, even today, with unregulated logging and the destruction of habitat that is threatening the survival of a myriad of creatures, like the orang-utan, and the survival of the Dayak and other indigenous people, who are now forced to abandon their long-house culture in the forests. At the same time we learn much more about Indonesian politics and religion, family life and cross cultural relationships and eggs and orang-utans and how Aussies manage to find ice to cool their beer even in the most far flung river towns.

There is also a spiritual aspect to Mark's story. He clearly was affected by his journey through the jungle and his appreciation of Indonesia with all its challenges was crystallized. At one point, Mark and his companions reached the apex of the Muller Ranges high in the central mountains of Kalimantan and he paused to reflect on how Indonesia had changed him and he found himself at a literal and a figurative crossroads. Rain that fell east would end up in the Makassar Straits. If perchance it fell west it would find itself in the South China Sea. Mark realised how even small decisions could change the direction of his life.

So 'Crazy Little Heaven' is four books in one: an autobiography, a travel tale, an Indonesian history, and a spiritual odyssey which will allow you to develop your own understanding of Indonesia and its people.

Tonight I am also soft launching 'Crazy Little Heaven' the CD. Copies will be available within weeks. These are Mark's original songs about love and life in Indonesia. Producing a CD, like a memoir, is a team effort - a collaboration of many people. Mark's music is the foundation upon which local Lombok musicians and music engineers like Qisie, could add to and mould into some extraordinary sounds to produce a unique collection of very pleasant easy to listen to music. We'll hear a song or two from it before we leave tonight.

But back to the book: Mark ends his narrative with the following words but I encourage you all to read the rest of them and listen to his music for yourself. He says:

"As I travel around the islands of Indonesia, my passion for the place does not diminish. The longer I spend here, the more I understand. The more Indonesia becomes comprehensible and normal, the more I appreciate the mix. And while the country has changed enormously over the years I've spent here, it remains a beguiling mix of contradictions and ambiguities: a sweet, disappearing world."

So tonight, here in Lombok I am happy to declare 'Crazy Little Heaven', the book, officially launched for its third time, and 'Crazy Little Heaven' the CD launched (softly) for the first time!

The book will give you a great insight into Indonesia, the cultural nuances, what goes on behind the scenes and helps you to make sense of Indonesia. Mark has lived in Indonesia for over 25 years. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in living in Indonesia. I learnt so much about Indonesian culture and customs from reading this book.

It is highly entertaining and well written.
You will be captivated from the first paragraph to the last.
