DITCHING DIETS: How to lose weight in a way you can maintain, by Gillian Riley

DITCHING DIETS is the alternative to dieting and slimming clubs - because a diet only works while you stick to it and hardly anyone sticks to any diet forever. The best way to lose weight is by developing a style of eating you can live with, because it’s flexible and probably unique to you. But often that’s easier said than done.

You’ve no doubt tried some different things already. Maybe you’ve been advised to eat only when hungry and stop when full; to overeat your favourite foods so you’d learn to get over them; to find the right kind or combination of carbs, proteins and fats, or micronutrients; to deal with your emotions in order to stop wanting to eat so much.

None of this takes into account what happens in your brain when your natural, survival drive to eat (and eat and eat) becomes activated. The purpose of this drive is to get you through the next famine, but in these times of plenty it’s a disaster. In the face of this, nutritional advice may not make much of a difference. You can know what’s healthy, but find it impossible to stick to for long enough.

Do you feel hungry after a meal, no matter what was in it? Do you lose weight only to yo-yo back again? Do you think about food too much of the time? Would you like to stop dieting and eat ‘like a normal person’?

DITCHING DIETS explains how to stop eating so much by thinking in a way that’s the opposite of dieting. The opposite because it’s the dieting mindset – especially the prohibitions - that contribute to the problem in the first place.

You will discover how to eat in ways you truly want to live with, rather than ways you later regret; how to eat less without following any rules, either your own or those taken on from others; how to develop the motivation to make changes, and stay in touch with that motivation long term.

You will learn how to eliminate:
• persistent cravings and obsession with food
• feeling deprived, miserable or irritable when you don’t overeat
• an all-or-nothing relationship with food
• rebellious overeating and bingeing.

DITCHING DIETS will give you control around food so that you can lose weight – and maintain that weight loss in the longer term. This is about how to make a shift in your thinking about food that will last, and once you’ve made that shift there will be no need to diet again.

DITCHING DIETS is easy to read, with thought-provoking and practical advice that the author has taught in seminars for many years. Not a book on nutrition, this is a common sense, gimmick-free approach that enables you to overcome your attraction to all that food you don’t really need.

“Her way of achieving a healthy lifestyle and junking diets for ever has to be the only way forward in my life.” ELLE

“I can sense the shift in my thought process and I am no longer grazing from the fridge all night.” The Daily Telegraph

“I am eating healthier food and less of it. What I like most is the idea of never going on a diet again.” The Independent

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
Many years ago I signed up for a liquid diet programme, and the day I was to begin I woke up with a strong desire for a large, fried, English breakfast. The thing was, I didn’t ever eat breakfasts like that at that time. Nothing about my biochemistry had changed at that point; what had changed was the way I was thinking.
I write this book not only from my own experience, but also from all I’ve learned over sixteen years of running seminars on dealing with overeating. I’ve had countless conversations with all kinds of people who feel out of control with food at least sometimes. I know what made the difference for them, and it’s all in this book.

This is a revised and updated edition of my book, Beating Overeating (2001, 2009).

Short and Useful for Binge-Eaters, Overeaters, and those who Think Food Has Power over Them
By Mir
BIG HONKING NOTE: I almost Kindled this book, thinking it was a new one by Gillian (I own WILLPOWER! and BEATING OVEREATING and EATING LESS by her). If you already own BEATING OVEREATING: The Easy Guide, which is her book with the orange cover, then you already have this. It's the same book (except may have some second edition updates, not sure, since there are some changes to the latter chapter headings).

Glad I tried it out first with Kindle Borrow, or I'd be out the moolah. Still, it's a good, simple, short book.

If you feel food has power over you, then please buy this (if you don't already own BEATING OVEREATING, or you own it and want the updated version).

Gillian puts the focus back on YOU, your choices, your power. Whatever diet plan you may follow, this would be the diet plan for your will/mind. Use it as an adjunct to your food and exercise plan. So much is in the brain. So much is habit. So much is, in many cases, thinking we cannot do it, it's beyond us, the temptation is in control. Change that. Gillian helps.

It's easy enough to look at the preview to get a sense of the tone, her writing style, and the chapter headings. Do take a look.

You can also visit Gillian's site, Eating Less dot com, and sign up for her newsletter. I did back in 2010. (Well, it's how I found out she had a new book.) I've lost 116 pounds, and part of it included learning from Gillian's books. I was a binge-eater and overeater, and I have not binged since May of 2010. I still have days I overeat, though. That's why I'm gonna go ahead and reread this. It helps. Thanks, Gillian.

I wish you well as you find your ability to choose BETTER and BEST...

Fabulous read about how to eat less
By SLSVeganish
The author comes from England and her English personality and vernacular shines through it. Her book is meant for readers who have dieted, lost the weight, gained it back only to find that their pervasive overeating habit gets in the way of their ever achieving any real lasting success. Gillian suggests that we ditch the diets and that we come to understand that every food we take into our mouthes (good, bad or healthy) is a choice that we make. We are free to eat whatever it is that we like and when we are about to eat compulsively, we are still in charge of whatever it is we put into our mouthes. We need to own that truth. She teaches us how to apply awareness to the eating and overeating sessions that we engage in and course correct by setting up specific times to eat and to plan right before we go to eat what it is that we intend to eat, how much we are going to eat, etc. Through witnessing and allowing ourselves to feel the discomfort that comes along with not fulfilling the compulsive desire to eat outside of planned meal times and outside of the food we have planned to eat, we can begin to eat less and discover one day that we've lost weight and feel so much better in every other way through enhanced self esteem to increased greater health and well being.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a compulsive overeater, who has been on diets, lost the weight and gained it back and is ready to deal with their overeating problem head on once and for all. This is the abridged version of her earlier book entitled: Eating Less - Say Goodbye to Overeating by Gillian Riley. Enjoy them both.

This is THE book that made a difference for me.
By AU
This book is amazing. About two years ago I became very restrictive with my diet, and then began to binge and overexercise. After that, I stopped being restrictive and overexercising but I still binged. With a lot of hard work, I managed to tone my bingeing down but I still overate. I've never been overweight but I wasn't happy with my weight after gaining almost 20 pounds. This is the book that made the difference for me (and I've lost five pounds since I read it a few weeks ago).

I won't summarize the book here, but let me tell you that this has been the biggest help to change the way I think about eating. After reading all sorts of weight loss books, blogs, podcasts, forums and magazine articles-- I've realized that overeating is a mental problem for me. It's not about self-control or what foods or how much of them I eat or don't eat, or what exercise programs I'm doing or if I tally up calories, ...! A central theme of the book is that you should find reasons other than weight to decide wether or not you will eat something, how much to eat, and when. I'd heard this advice before, but the way Gillian Riley writes, everything suddenly becomes clear and makes perfect sense.

You have to apply what you've learned and WORK at it. You have to make an effort, or nothing will become of it and you'll never feel beter. It's not a magic pill, though this is as good as it gets!
