Worth the read

Awesome book, a good sampling of various articles with perspectives on a number of environmental and social situations and philosophies. Worth the read. I got this book for my "Writing and the Environment" class, and will be getting another copy for my Mother, and possibly a friend. Informative, and eye-opening to a wide variety of concepts and situations not as commonly discussed in mainstream culture. Admittedly, I am already distinctively predisposed towards social justice and environmental conservation concepts in general, so that influences my opinion of the writings' subjects and value I am sure.

Thought Provoking!

I had to purchase this book for my college English course. I'm not much of an environmentalist, but I try to remain conscious of things going on in the world. This book is filled with some great pieces that really boosted our class discussion. Because it is a book containing articles, it's a great book to read while traveling. I would definitely suggest this book if you're looking to buy.

About the Author

Joanna Hickson spent twenty five years presenting and producing News and Arts programmes for the BBC. Her first published book was a children’s historical novel Rebellion at Orford Castle but more recently she has turned to adult fiction, concentrating on bringing fifteenth century English history and some of its fascinating principal characters to life.

She is married with a large family and gets inspiration from her Wiltshire farmhouse home, which dates back to her chosen period.

Not as good as the first

Unfortunately I didn't find this sequel to be as good as "The Agincourt Bride". The first novel really allowed us to get to know Katherine of Valois on a very human level, whereas within these pages she was somewhat lost. By distancing herself from her companion and former wet nurse, Mette, she became distant from the reader also, which was a shame as in the first novel her personality really shone through the pages. In this novel however it was Mette who glowed, which did a lot to improve the story in my opinion.
Mette is incredibly loyal to Katherine, often to the detriment of her own personal life. Her family takes second place to Katherine and it has always been something that has played on Mette's conscience. In this novel this issue is explored deeply and I was very happy for the way that the author chose to end Mette's story. Although a tragic end for Katherine, Mette and her family found happiness, which gave the novel a very bittersweet ending.
The thing I enjoyed most about this novel were the little bits of fact that I learnt throughout. Things I had previously not known about the beginnings of the Tudor family. For example, that Owen and Katherine had a daughter as well, although she is lost to history. I love how the author chose to include Margaret in her story. Furthermore, I learnt that any record of Owen and Katherine's marriage is also lost to history. It is generally accepted that it did take place, but it's interesting to me that there is technically no proof, especially considering who Katherine's grandson ended up becoming. Food for thought.

Love, politics and a great story

This is the second of two books about Catherine, bride to Henry V. As Catherine comes into her own as a wife and mother, she faces ongoing political intrigue from those around her. With her faithful friend Mette at her side, she tries to manage the sycophants around her. Some are on her side, others have very a different agendas! Life seems very good for Catherine as she gives birth to a son, but then Henry suddenly dies. Now new forces would like to become the ruling family in England, and they take Catherine's son from her, so they have the power of king while he is a baby. Unfortunately, they also lose much of the territory that Henry had won in France.

Catherine finds that she is safer away from court and the public eye, even though she cannot have her son with her. As she lives quietly, she falls in love with Owen Tudor. But the political factions don't want her to have any influence or happiness, so their liaison must remain a secret.

Catherine was lucky in love, first with Henry V and second with Owen, but not so much in politics.

The Tudor Bride is a nice sequel to the Agincourt Bride. There is some interesting history to be learned, and the side story about Mette and Catherine's relationship, while fictional, adds depth to the book. Definitely a worthwhile read.

Higher expectations

After waiting months for Tudor Bride to be published , I had higher expectations, but don't mistake me, I liked it well enough. It's very light and easy reading, I finished it too fast for my taste. The real story is hard to believe in itself, how a former queen managed to have six children, without the court knowing? I gave 4 stars because Owen Tudor seems too soft, kind of lacking character, not to well developed. The Tudor dinasty is known for the fierce character of its (too few) kings and queens, and after reading penman's trilogy of the Welsh Princes, I kind of wonder if Owen Tudor had the same guts that his descendants had. I'm expeculating, the book is good!

Wonderful Overview on an Important Era

In "The Awakening of American Nationalism," George Dangerfield recovers familiar ground. In many ways, the book serves as a shorter version of his Pulitzer winning "The Era of Good Feelings" but "The Awakening" focuses more on politics and less on culture. While shorter and more focused, "The Awakening" remains an excellent survey of a crucial time period. Dangerfield shows the growth of both economic nationalism and democratic nationalism and how these conflicting forces undermined any hopes for an Era of Good Feelings in national politics. If you are looking to understand the important political period between the end of the War of 1812 and the Jacksonian period, this is an excellent overview and, best of all, is an easy read.

Dangerfield deserves respect.

history buffs should read all of this series. The focus is on politics,often gritty details. D. writes with irony, verve, and understatement. Those who can resist a statement like "To the...rulers of Europe the United States was little more than a grimy republican thumbprint upon the far margin of that page of history which, at Vienna, they were so ingeniously writing backward." (p. 4)? if you can, you may wish to look elsewhere. For a short intro to this important era, read D.

Falling in Silence

I really enjoyed both of Criss Copp's books, Falling in Silence and Always Summer. And I love that there is always a happy ending. In Falling in Silence you definitely feel for the main characters Imogen and Saxon. Both have been through so much and yet everything that has happened to them in their pasts only seems to make them perfect for each other in the here and now.

Imogen has been abused and neglected by both of her parents, and when she was 14 she went through something tragic that made her decide to become a mute for 5 years. Saxon grew up with junkie parents, and got his girlfriend pregnant at the age of 16. He took his girlfriend out of where they were living, became responsible, got help, a job and decided to take care of his new family. His daughter is born deaf, and is abandoned by her mom at 13 months old. Saxon becomes a single dad and devotes his life to protecting and caring for his daughter.

When Imogen meets Saxon she is 19, almost 20, and he is 22 and his daughter is 5. Imogen feels an instant connection with his daughter, realizing the little girl is deaf and signs just like she does to communicate. Saxon is immediately attracted to Imogen yet scared about getting into a relationship with anyone.

They are thrown together and soon experience a whirlwind type of love/romance. Though they have found each other and the 3 of them seem to have an ideal family, there are still people trying to pull them apart.

Good story, but had some annoying issues

This was a good story. I enjoyed the plot and the characters, but there were some issues that really drove me crazy

*There were way too many exclamation points!!!! Just about every conversation in the book involved exclamation points. It was very distracting and did not make sense. Even parts where it says "he grumbled" would be followed by an !

*The book takes place in Virginia, but the author is obviously not American (Australian I am guessing). I am a firm believer of writing what you know. Books should take place in an area the author has lived, or at least spent a significant amount of time in. Shopping carts were referred to as "trolleys" the words bloody and bloke were used often,and the whole sentence structure throughout the book was just not "American" . I was finding myself reading the book with an Austrian accent in my head. I decided to just pretend they lived in Australia and that made it a little less annoying.

*The book was written with two separate points of view, but there was not much difference in the two characters 'voices' Both main charters had very similar inner monologs.

I may sound nit picky, but when I read I like to get carried away and lost in the story. Things like this distract me and ruin the flow, therefor bringing me back to the reality that it is 'just a book' and that makes it not as fun to read.

I think this author has a great imagination and really good stories to tell. I am on the fence about reading her other books though, because I worry they will have the same issues that annoy me.

Touching, Sweet, and unique - Nice Work

I enjoyed reading this book very much. The story was a bit more unique than most of what's out there now, though it did still follow the formula to a degree, it managed to improve upon it a bit. The characters are likeable, if a tiny bit "underdone", and the sense of humor is really refreshing. I found a lot to like here, and I decided on 4 instead of 5 stars for a couple of reasons: 1) Criss - you need a good editor. There were quite a few instances of incorrect word usage and grammar issues. I have always believed that if you are going to take the time to write something, put your name on it and put it out for the world to see, it is incumbent on you to make sure it's right! 2) I am not the world's biggest fan of "hurry up love". And the only reason I didn't hate it here is because of Tom - his story was endearing and comfortable and made the scenario a bit more believable.

The main characters were written intelligently, with no massive wallowing in self-pity or stupidity for any of them. They all had issues, imperfections, and WTF moments, but they dealt with them like adults - Yeah! Instead of making them appear annoying and vapid, in this case, they were written well enough that it made them seem like real, flawed humans. I liked that. There was tragedy and triumph, joy, and tears (which, I will tell you is a rarity for me!), and I rooted for them - big time!

The peripherals could have used a bit more development and I don't think the book would have suffered from being just a bit longer to allow that to happen, but that being said, it didn't suffer greatly from the absence either. It would have been nice, but not an imperative.

I can really only sum it up the way I did above. Nice Work!
