From June 1942 to October 1943, more than 100,000 Allied POWs who had been forced into slave labor by the Japanese died building the infamous Burma-Thailand Death Railway, an undertaking immortalized in the film "The Bridge on the River Kwai." One of the few who survived was American Marine H. Robert Charles, who describes the ordeal in vivid and harrowing detail in Last Man Out. The story mixes the unimaginable brutality of the camps with the inspiring courage of the men, including a Dutch Colonial Army doctor whose skill and knowledge of the medicinal value of wild jungle herbs saved the lives of hundreds of his fellow POWs, including the author.

From the Back Cover

“A remarkable story, long overdue, of the treatment of POWs captured by Japan.”

—Arthur L. Maher, Rear Admiral, USN, Senior officer to survive sinking of the USS Houston, POW of the Japanese in World War II

“In World War II, to move materials and troops from Japan to Burma by avoiding the perilous sea route around the Malay Peninsula, the Japanese military built a railroad through the jungles of Thailand and Burma at great human cost to its prisoner laborers. Last Man Out is an effective addition to the history of this tragedy.”

—Library Journal

From June 1942 to October 1943, more than one hundred thousand Allied POWs who had been forced into slave labor by the Japanese died building the infamous Burma-Thailand Death Railway, an undertaking immortalized in the 1957 film Bridge on the River Kwai. One of the few who survived was American H. Robert Charles, who describes the ordeal in vivid and harrowing detail in Last Man Out: Surviving the Burma–Thailand Death Railway. The story mixes the unimaginable brutality of the camps with the inspiring courage of the men, including a Dutch Colonial Army doctor whose skill and knowledge of the medicinal value of wild jungle herbs saved the lives of hundreds of his fellow POWs, including the author.

About the Author

H. Robert Charles was born in Pitcher, Oklahoma, Charles grew up on a wheat farm and cattle ranch near Hutchinson, Kansas, and enlisted in the Marine Corps in June 1940. He was a machine gunner aboard the USS Houston at the time it was sunk by the Japanese in Sunda Strait, March 1, 1942. He swam nine hours, was picked up off the coast of Java by the Japanese, and held forty-three months in slave labor camps in Burma, Thailand, and Saigon.

Repatriated at the end of the war by British paratroopers and Office of Strategic Services personnel, Charles spent time at a hospital in Calcutta before returning home.

After graduating from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Charles later joined Parents Magazine in New York, serving as family home editor.

One of the best memoirs of WWII
By Kelly Howard
This was a very well-written book that depicts much of life in the camps for the unfortunate men who were forced to build the Burma-Thailand RR. The author was a writer, & it shows*. He tried for years to suppress the horrors he & the others endured, but eventually was convinced to write about them.

I said "life in the camps" because that's the primary focus of the book, particularly the fascinating & brave character & history of the Dutch doctor who worked so hard to help the others, despite a near total lack of medicines, medical supplies, & while they were on starvation rations. Interestingly, Dr Hekking was able to employ his knowledge of herbal medicines, tho the more "traditional" American & British doctors thought he was nuts &/or incompetent for using these "weeds", thinking him more of a witch doctor.

Charles also describes the unbelievably horrifying conditions on the ships which were used to transport the unfortunates to Japan...rather like what the Africans endured in the original slave trade, with the added piquancy of possibly getting torpedoed by your own side because the Japanese didn't, say, put a Red Cross on the transport ships.

At the risk of sounding ghoulish, I sort of wish he'd talked a bit more about the actual work on the railroad, but it doesn't detract from the book. I think it would've been useful to counter the mis-impression most people have, especially if all they know on the subject is from the movie "Bridge on the River Kwai," which makes it sound as if the prisoners were determined to do the best darned job on that bridge they possibly could, to prove they were better engineers than the Japanese (or something). The truth is, the prisoners did everything they could to sabotage or slow down the building of the railway & the bridge, which was incredibly dangerous as the Japanese would beat them mercilessly if they noticed the prisoners lagging.

*In the preface, James Hornfischer mentions that this book could stand alongside of William Manchester's memoir, "Goodbye Darkness; A Memoir of the Pacific War." I agree with this encomium & would say it also stands with EB Sledge's memoir. Manchester's incredible book gets my vote for one of the best books of all time, regardless of subject...I've read hundreds of books on the World Wars --& probably hundreds of thousands on other subjects....I go through 3-10 books a week, & have done so since the 1960s. In other words, this book is in very impressive company.

Great story about special doctor in terrible conditions
By Tom Betz
H. Robert Charles does an excellent job of describing the terrible conditions of being a prisoner of war in World War II, and being forced to work for the Japanese in building the Thailand-Burma railroad.
He singles out the efforts of Dutch Doctor Henri Hekking who worked to save many American, British, Australian and Dutch prisoners during the three years of captivity in Burma and Thailand.
Charles was one of the few Americans who were prisoners working on the railroad. He was a Marine from the USS Houston sunk in Februray 1942 off Java.
Certainly one of the best books about the experiences of that terrible time I have read.
Recently was in Thailand and spent a couple of days along the River Kwai and traveled a small section of the Thai portion of the railroad operating today. It was that experience that got me looking fo books about the Thai-Burma railroad.
I will admit I had a fascination about the events going back to when I was a young man and watched the 1957 British movie "Bridge on the River Kwai." When I walked on the bridge in May I found myself whistling the "Colonel Bogey March" which was used as the theme song for the movie. An elderly Thai gentleman was playing a violin, and when I started whisteling he played the march as well. I wondered how many times a day he heard the march being whisteled, and I did give him some money for his effort.
The War Cemetery at Kanchanaburi and the Death Railway Museum were beautiful and very instructive about the events. It was at the Death Railway Museum I first understood about the USS Houston and the Texas artiliary unit captured in Java and how they became part of the railway work force.
Well worth the read, and I hope to return to the River Kwai someday for another visit to reflect on what these prisoners experienced.

Fascinating!
By Fierce & Fond Reader
The Bridge on the River Kwai (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) was the last movie my Dad ever saw when it premiered in London. He insisted on getting out of his sick bed & that we all attend with him. I watch the movie every now & again, just to remember him & the walking stick he had that had been made by one of his friends who'd been there.

LAST MAN OUT is H. Robert Charles' memories as a young naval gunner whose ship, the USS HOUSTON, was sunk in the Sunda Strait off Java in one of the earliest PTO battles in March '42. He was hauled out of the sea by an enemy who abhorred surrender. They shipped him & other survivors off to a life of building a railway under starvation conditions with jungle illnesses from Burma to Thailand upon which the Japanese intended to ship men & materiel in its quest to conquer all of Asia.

It's 1978 & Robert Charles is the epitome of the successful American business & family man... except he's falling apart: the same nightmare robs him of sleep, he's drinking like a fish & has so many terrors he's at the end of his rope... & as before, to combat all this he's just sold one company & taken on a whole new one, working in conditions & a location that, for some reason, give him the sweats.

During a rare phone call with one of his wartime buddies he's told that the VA, since the Vietnam War, is open to all sorts of new doctoring & he really ought to get himself to a therapist. There his memories start surfacing, & in doing so relieve him enough to begin unraveling the story of the one person every POW he's kept in touch with says helped keep 'em alive: a Dutchman familiar with the plants of the Burmese jungle, called Dr. Hekking.

Of course, there are never enough B&W photos or maps as I study the young lads who stepped into that storm. Never having been in combat cuz I'm the "wrong" gender, I've been gathering women's memoirs of their POW & camp years. This, written by a man, focuses on what matters to men: what they remember & how, what they opined & why.

One of the best memoirs about someone other than the writer!

An afterthought: Recently major news stations showed a few seconds of a ceremony of remembrance for the dropping of the bombs on Japan where some 100+ thousand civilians were incinerated & even more terribly wounded. The news anchors stressed how remarkable this year was cuz it's the first time American & European representatives have attended... no mention of the 100+ thousands of Allied POWs: killed & alive. It wasn't until 1995 that a memorial in Huston was created for the lads who perished all those decades ago.

The 42 Letter Name of God: The Mystical Name Of Manifestation (Sacred Names Book 6), by Baal Kadmon

In this book, we will be discussing an ancient Jewish prayer, often called the " The Kabbalists Prayer" and the "Genesis Prayer" called in Hebrew " Ana Bekoach" . This powerful prayer on the surface seems like a standard prayer, nothing particularly remarkable is contained within the verses. To most, it is just another prayer, but to those who look, they will find within the text the 42 letter name of God. This name of God is so powerful that just by reciting it and gazing upon the letters, you can gain immense powers from the divine. Powers that can solve all your problems. I know it sounds too good to be true, but this prayer and the 42 letter name of God within its verses has been proven to be very powerful. If you look it up you will find countless testaments to the power of this name.

This highly anticipated second edition features new chapters and sections, 225 new references, and comprehensive R software. In keeping with the previous edition, this book is about the art and science of data analysis and predictive modeling, which entails choosing and using multiple tools. Instead of presenting isolated techniques, this text emphasizes problem solving strategies that address the many issues arising when developing multivariable models using real data and not standard textbook examples. It includes imputation methods for dealing with missing data effectively, methods for fitting nonlinear relationships and for making the estimation of transformations a formal part of the modeling process, methods for dealing with "too many variables to analyze and not enough observations," and powerful model validation techniques based on the bootstrap. The reader will gain a keen understanding of predictive accuracy and the harm of categorizing continuous predictors or outcomes. This text realistically deals with model uncertainty and its effects on inference, to achieve "safe data mining." It also presents many graphical methods for communicating complex regression models to non-statisticians.

Regression Modeling Strategies presents full-scale case studies of non-trivial datasets instead of over-simplified illustrations of each method. These case studies use freely available R functions that make the multiple imputation, model building, validation and interpretation tasks described in the book relatively easy to do. Most of the methods in this text apply to all regression models, but special emphasis is given to multiple regression using generalized least squares for longitudinal data, the binary logistic model, models for ordinal responses, parametric survival regression models and the Cox semi parametric survival model.A new emphasis is given to the robust analysis of continuous dependent variables using ordinal regression.

As in the

first edition, this text is intended for Masters' or Ph.D. level graduate students who have had a general introductory probability and statistics course and who are well versed in ordinary multiple regression and intermediate algebra. The book will also serve as a reference for data analysts and statistical methodologists, as it contains an up-to-date survey and bibliography of modern statistical modeling techniques. Examples used in the text mostly come from biomedical research, but the methods are applicable anywhere predictive models ("analytics") are useful, including economics, epidemiology, sociology, psychology, engineering and marketing.

Pretty Dang Good for a Math Book
By Hello
I've only read one chapter in this book, but I think I can say that this is one of my favorite math books. My experience with it has almost been interactive because all the questions that I have are always answered either in the next sentence or in the footnotes. Regression Modeling Strategies is definitely a steal for whatever they are asking, if not for the amazing content and references, but for the number of pages and colored pictures alone. Writing this review is sort of funny because even if I was lying, it doesn't really matter since if you are reading this, you probably need it. The biggest downside to the book is the subpar cover; boring mustard color with text.

Rasa: Performing the Divine in India, by Susan L. Schwartz

While many people outside India find the images, sounds, and practices of Indian performing arts compelling and endeavor to incorporate them into the "global" repertoire, few are aware of the central role of religious belief and practice in Indian aesthetics. Completing the trilogy that includes Darsan: Seeing the Divine and Mantra: Hearing the Divine in India and America, this volume focuses on how rasa has been applied in a range of Indian performance traditions.

"Rasa" is taste, essence, flavor. How is it possible that a word used to describe a delicious masala can also be used to critique a Bharata Natyam performance? Rasa expresses the primary goals of performing arts in India in all the major literary, philosophical, and aesthetic texts, and it provides the cornerstone of the oral traditions of transmission. It is also essential to the study and production of sculpture, architecture, and painting. Yet its primary referent is cuisine. This book articulates the religious sensibility underlying the traditional performing arts as well as other applications of rasa and examines the relationships between the arts and religion in India today.

Review

'Rasa' signifies flavor, taste, and shared aesthetic experience. In this short but far-ranging, thoughtful, and provocative book, Susan Schwartz explores how dancers, actors, musicians, sages, and philosophers have thought about and used rasa over the centuries. She wonders what rasa's new possibilities might be for the Indian diaspora of the twenty-first century.

(Richard Schechner, Tisch School of the Arts New York University)

Good overview for new students of Indian dance forms
By Bobblefrog
Required textbook for class. Fairly easy to follow the writing style. Good pictures. I think this could work as a good overview text for anyone that wanted to learn more about Hindu dance as it relates to spirituality. Not intensive, it would make a good jumping off point, which is why I expect it was selected as our main class text.

"I've read this book twice now, and I have to say, the second read was eye opening. It is brilliant. There is so much depth, both in the characters and in the plot, full of hidden gems and woven with mastery, that it begins to get into A Song of Ice and Fire territory. Yet whereas the later books in Martin's series took me weeks to finish, I blitzed through The Axe and the Throne so quickly on my first read that I did not fully appreciate it."
-Goodreads Reviewer, Goblindoper | See full review on Goodreads.

"The violence and brutality is vivid. The characters are skillfully developed and each one is flawed in some way that makes them more real and believable. The plot line develops slowly and unpredictability, which I appreciate. I have no idea what lays in store in future chapters. There were instances where I didn't want to continue reading for fear of what my be happening to favored characters...
I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one to be published!"

"Not only does every character have an amazing amount of depth, but there seems to be a genuine surprise around every corner. I recommend this to anybody who is into fantasy, and can't wait for the second book!"

Which character will be your favorite?
By W. Irving
This story is populated with lots of wonderfully rendered characters with strong motivations. While the many points-of-view remind me of The Spoonriver Anthology, they do provide greater depth of understanding and a richer experience of the events as they unfold.

The plot lines are braided alongside each other, and then some of the strands merge, making it a challenge for the reader to favor any individual character. I tended to like the character with the POV of the moment.

Relationships have deep connections that are strained due to complications, and these life or death complications add to the dramatic tension. There is humor, friendship, a bit of romance, wonderful fight scenes, hints of magic, lots of plot twists and turns, and some characters die while some survive. The various settings and politics/cultures affect the characters' actions. Have a snack handy as the food is described deliciously.

There are grim scenes, but they are not gratuitously gory. The descriptions of violence leave off where I would turn away were I to watch this story enacted on a movie screen.

I recommend this book to older, more seasoned, fantasy readers as they would appreciate more deeply the relationship nuances and tensions because of their own life experiences. I especially appreciated the nearly error-free writing.

While the book ends without definite closure to the plot lines, some on grim notes, it's obvious there's more to come. There's a great deal of groundwork laid for the next book as well as suspenseful momentum. I look forward to reading the next installment in this epic series.

Fantastic Grim Dark From an Author to Watch
By Jake
Mr. Ireman is a gifted author; if you've a wit of sense, you are about to hit the buy button.

He was born for the Grim Dark genre. His characters are wonderfully broken, terrifying and pathetic. His plot is impossible to second guess without recycling trendy plot twists anther insipid gimmicks.

I occasionally had to stop reading this book to take a break: the story was so dark and events so shocking that I was actually affected. I'm a 44 year-old crabby, military vet; this has never happened to me.

To say this book is good is far too simple; this book is complex, dark and compelling. It is a creative, disturbing and wonderful addition to the genre. I can only hope that we readers lend Mr. Ireman the ability to continue writing by directly supporting his efforts.

Lastly, I'd be remiss were I not to mention the exceptional level of editing in this book: typos are not present; there's no logical fallacies; it's a thing of beauty.

Solid fantasy book

Great book - liked the characters and the story progression was steady and interesting. I would say this book is on par with the likes of Name of The Wind, and the First Law trilogy. Looking forward to the next instalment.

Good for some purposes
By Susan S
Very helpful if you are looking for places to stay and to eat in major population areas.. Not so helpful regarding smaller towns or general information about the things to see and do.

Not their best effort
By Tim Friedman
Disappointed. We are travelling in China for a month and have been using the Lonely Planet China for that trip. We are able to plan every facet of the trip with the book. Specifically - how to actually get places (the most important part of traveling if you ask me). Unfortunately for the second month of travel in SEA, this is not possible with the LP VCLNT copy we received just before we left home (too bad we left the old version at home expecting the updated version to be more useful). The book has good information about places to stay and eating (as well as tips like "be nice to locals" or "don't hurt the environment") but not as much information about how to get from point A to point B. So far I am constantly online trying to deduce the best route from Bangkok to Siem Reap to HCMC to Hanoi etc. In the China one it lays out on point transportation options for the common next destinations. This book does not do a very good job of laying out transport options between these countries - surprising as they encourage you to travel through each in the Plan Your Trip Section. Basically it says to fly. Where is the adventure in that?
Finally, I also don't understand the need to put reviews of five star hotels in these books. How difficult would it be to print two identical versions of the same book - one for normal travelers and one for those with no budget? Maybe take out the low end transportation tips for the latter as well. Lots of wasted print. Not their best effort.
Overall, I first used LP for a long trip through Asia 12 years ago and in my opinion the product (in this case) has devolved into too many feel good tips and high end options and not enough useful data. Get back to basics boys and girls.

This Book Will Keep You From Finding The Good Stuff
By Stinky K.
So I went on a long trip around SE Asia which included many countries in the area. I was thrilled when I found out that these books were on Kindle. I figured I could download the books instead of carrying a heavy book with the limited space in my pack, and I was going to need a lot of books. For starters, the Kindle books are worthless. Instead of having more information, because they don't have to use more paper, there is less information. In fact, so little that it looks like they put these books together in such a hurry just to get by so they could throw them out there. The formatting is outrageous. Even the worst Kindle books have clickable links so you don't have to scroll back and forth, back and forth, from the index. I asked Amazon for a refund and had them delete the worthless excuse for a publication.
Next, most all of the information in all the different countries' books I looked at in bookstores and from other travelers was way out of date, and these are new books. The worst problem is that there is so little information as to make these books a complete waste of owning. All the great places I stayed at, and everybody else easily found as well, are not in their books. Following Lonely Planet guides actually keeps you from finding all the best places to stay, because you are relying on out of date, poorly researched information. They will tell you things like this is the place all the backpackers go and is the best value, and it will be completely wrong. I went to one place they gave a great review in a new book, and it seemed like a filthy drug den with gangsters running it. The new owners of Lonely Planet have taken the good name of the Wheelers and their past accomplishments, and are milking it for all it's worth without putting in the work.
Here is what I suggest. Go to Google maps to look at the cities or places where you plan to go. Even the smallest places like Don Khon, or Thakhek, in Laos, or Cambodia, or wherever, will have hotels listed on Agoda, or Booking.com, or some other site, for example. Just Google the place name and hotels. You will also see other places listed on Google map which have links to reviews, with up to date listings and prices. You will also see where the concentrations of places to stay are in a town, that might not have a link, and then you simply go there and look around. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the way Lonely Planet was getting a lot it's limited information, because in everything I read, it seemed that they had never visited any of the limited places they cover, and when I say limited, I mean limited. How they can have the guts to print out new editions with less information than the previous ones is beyond me. My fifteen-year-old edition of India, for example, had more maps than the new book. Anyway, you don't need maps in a book anymore. Everything you need to know is up on the web and current and the smallest villages have internet access.
I would look at fellow traveler's books in disbelief. The people carrying them said they were almost useless. It was a common topic of conversation. Everyone said they would be no longer buying these. One guy joked about feeding it to the cows that commonly eat paper out of the trash in India. Seriously, they would be more useful with blank pages so you can write in your own info, or that from other travelers. Don't waste your money or be disrespected by these slackers, whom I wouldn't be surprised have never travelled farther than from their computers to the coffee machine.
