Built to Last became an instant business classic. This audio abridgement is read by the authors, who alternate chapters. Collins is a bit breathlessly enthusiastic, but clear and interesting; Porras, unfortunately, is poorly inflected and wooden. They set out to determine what's special about "visionary" companies--the Disneys, Wal-Marts, and Mercks, companies at the very top of their game that have demonstrated longevity and great brand image. The authors compare 18 "visionary" picks to a control group of "successful-but-second-rank" companies. Thus Disney is compared to Columbia Pictures, Ford to GM, and so on.

A central myth, according to the authors, is that visionary companies start with a great product and are pushed into the future by charismatic leaders. Usually false, Collins and Porras find. Much more important, and a much more telling line of demarcation between a wild success like 3M and an also-ran like Norton, is flexibility. 3M had no master plan, little structure, and no prima donnas. What makes a visionary company? This book, written by a team from Stanford's Graduate School of Business, compares what the authors have identified as "visionary" companies with selected companies in the same industry. The authors juxtapose Disney and Columbia Pictures, Ford and General Motors, Motorola and Zenith, and Hewlett-Packard and Texas Instruments, to name a few. The visionary companies, the authors found out, had a number of common characteristics; for instance, almost all had some type of core ideology that guided the company in times of upheaval and served as a constant bench mark. Not all the visionary companies were founded by visionary leaders, however. On the whole, this is an intriguing book that occasionally provides rare and interesting glimpses into the inner workings and philosophical foundations of successful businesses. [book:Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies|4122] was one of the first business books I've ever read. At the time, as an aspiring entrepreneur, James C. Collins spoke volume to me and how I should structure an everlasting company. Written by two Stanford University's Graduate School of Business professors, the level of knowledge and experience they jointly possess will exceed your expectations. The main point of the book is to either identify your business as a "clock builder" or a "time teller." Time tellers focus on being the loudest and most disruptive companies, while clock builders are more reserved and focus on growth and preserving their core values for centuries into the future. As a well researched book might indicate, the authors provide a tremendous amount of detail on what makes companies such as Coca-Cola, Citi Bank, Wal-Mart, Walt Disney, Nordstrom, stand the test of time. These companies have been active in our lives for generations and they reveal exactly how they have endured, and how they will continue to endure for many generations to come. Whether you are an entrepreneur, owner, middle management or a salesmen, this book will undoubtably inspire you to reach great heights.

Anyone tasked with the daunting responsibility of running an organization is faced with the challenge of culture. In the event that you are the "lucky" successor to a founder or a turn-around situation (my professional scenarios all have been in this realm), the task of what to do, where to go, and how to get there are huge - the culture is either well established, failing, and needs to change, or the culture may have been one of personality, facing a vacuum, and needs to be institutionalized. Collins and Porras look at a series of companies that have transcended this challenge and have developed a visionary culture that withstands the test of time.

Summarizing the basic themes:

* Be an architect and clock builder and design and develop a vision that stand the test of time
* Embrace the "Genius of AND." - do not accept difficult trade-offs and strive for the near impossible
* Preserve the core/stimulate progress - Develop, hone and ruthlessly protect core values, and innovate around that core
* Seek consistent alignment - Align all stakeholders to the vision of the organization and continue to insure alignment

Unlike some of the challenges faced by the companies chosen by Tom Peters in "In Search of Excellence", a 25 year run on Collins book finds many of his study subjects still in the forefront of their industries. Collins is definitely onto something, and is one of the more engaging writers of the genre. Definitely worth the read.

It is not a how-to book. It is not suggesting receipes for your own case to succeed. Rather it is explaining what visinoary companies did different than control group companies (still remarkably successfull compared to sectoral averages). You need to extract your lessons which suits to your spesific case.
I believe that this a good approach. It acknowledges that your case is unique. It also recognizes yourself as capable and willing to progress, hence inspires you about possible vision. In case you need to be convinced you could follow cases or quotations from the research.
This is another good feature because you have the chance to skip sections that %100 agree with author. It makes you fast to read whole book.
I like the coinciding ideas of visionary companies and TOC literature. You could find marks of Blue Ocean Strategies as well in the book.

Terrible

I am currently taking a summer course with this book. The examples that the book gives are the simplest examples, then half way through the exercises they get into more complicated problems that they have no examples for. They change the entire format of the problems so it really throws you a curve ball. My entire class agrees that this book does not give you the necessary examples to complete the exercises in the book. Maybe so you will go online and buy a subscription for the MyMathLab? If your professor/teacher has chosen to use this book...good luck and you will be spending alot of time in tutoring or online trying to figure things out!!

This book was an excellent helper for my Algebra class I took for Summer 2009.... Too bad I was too much of an idiot, and therefore needs to repeat the class again. Not the book's fault, I assure you.

Only bad thing about this is that, you will need to purchase a $70 access code from the website to get access to the online requirement for the class I took (some form of coursecompass, which gives you reviews, online quizzes, online tutors and such). The book I purchased did not come with this code.

Book is oK, but you need the access code ( wont get if used ) and therefore have to spend $78 ****** dollars for some stupid letters. what a total rip! You think you're saving with getting a cheap used book at $30 when the new price is $120-160, and feel good, then the teacher mentions..."oh yeah, by the way..." wish he told us before hand about the access code stuff. What a rip, what a money making book. $78 more to spend for a stupid code. RIP-OFF!

About the Author
Darrell Max Craig received his initiation into the martial arts in 1956 while stationed in Japan. In 1968, he became the Texas Open Karate Champion. The same year he was ranked 4th in the US in Okinawan weapons. In 1971, he started studying the art of Kendo and has participated in five World Kendo Championships. In 1985 he was a member of the US World team in Paris, France. He has choreographed martial arts scenes for a number of feature films and is the author of 7 books, including IAI: The Art of Drawing the Sword. He has been involved with numerous S.W.A.T. teams both federal and state as their self-defense mentor. He holds the following ranks in budo:
7th Dan Kyoshi, Shihan Kendo & Junse Jujitsu
6th Dan Kyoshi Karate & Iaido, Mugai Ryu
5th Dan Kyoshi Kobudo, Seishin Kai (Okinawan weaponry)
4th Dan Kodokan Judo & Japanese Police Aikido
Sensei Craig lives in Houston, Texas where he established the Houston Budokan, Inc. (www.houstonbudo.com) as a center for the study of Japanese martial arts. He retired from competition in 1986, but continues to coach and teach at his dojo.

Excellent resource on Ju Jitsu

Excellent book. Sensei Craig does an excellent job of explaining the historical aspects, his personal experience with Ju Jitsu as well as discussing techniques. If you are looking to learn techniques they are here, but you have to understand the system in which they are taught, primarily Happo-No-Kuzushi. The drawings are a bit crude but do help to some degree. The techniques are learned through his descriptions not the pictures and a background in Judo, Aikido, Jiu Jitsu will help. I studied Hapkido which is strongly based on Aiki jujitsu and many of techniques are very familiar to me.

the book in and of itself is pretty good (though I agree with issues on illustrations as somebody else has pointed out; had it had arrows describing movement it would be more helpful. But none of these are why I give it a 2 star).

However, the material in this book is essentially THE SAME as "Japan's ultimate martial art: Jujistu before 1882". If you own either one of them don't buy the other. This information is not explicitly pointed out and I didn't compare table of contents (but even if I did I wouldn't be sure they were basically the same thing). That's why I decided to give a 2 star.

Very disappointing and misleading

Japanese Jiu-jitsu: Secret Techniques of Self-Defense by Darrell Craig

Other reviewers have already commented on the content and illustrations in Craig's book so my review focuses exclusively on two aspects of the book. First the title is misleading. The Japanese spell it as Jujutsu (see official Romaji spelling), NOT Jiu-Jitsu and Craig who has lived and studied in Japan should know better. This spelling, Jiu-Jitsu, refers to the Brazilian version of the art which is very different from Japanese Jujutsu. Second, the cover photo is also misleading. What you see is two fighters dressed in BJJ or competition judo outfits its engaging in what BJJ is well known for, grappling on the ground. Japanese Jujutsu is a combat art (offense and self defense) and much of the fighting takes place in a standing position. The goal is to terminate the assailant in a few seconds and then take on the next assailant. Going to the ground is risky and time consuming and it is a practice that is discouraged in Japanese Jujutsu. Of course, one has to be able to fight on the ground if the situation demands but the cover photo of this book suggests ground fighting to be the primary focus. Further, when practitioners of Japanese Jujutsu go to the ground they are trained to strike vital areas, gouge out the eyes, dislocate fingers and strike the back of the neck (among other combat techniques) and not to embrace their assailant the way that is shown in the cover photo. Self Defense (and there are no secret techniques any more) is simply an adaptation and application of the combat techniques of Japanese Jujutsu to fit the demands of survival in dangerous situations that include restraining the assailant, causing the assailant pain or simply discouraging him from continuing his attack by means of deflection, joining and controlling techniques.

A good introductorary textbook

Brown and Ainley have written a good, introductory textbook on international relations. Commencing with an introduction to the major theories of IR and core concepts, the book then goes onto explore issues of globalization, political economy and global governance before turning to issues such as US hegemony and the politics of identity. Overall, a well written and concise introduction to IR.

Steven M. Penny is an author, educator, registered radiographer (ARRT),and registered sonographer (ARDMS). His specialties in sonographyinclude Abdomen, Obstetrics�& Gynecology, and Pediatrics. He haspublished multiple journal articles, including�several in the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography and Radiologic Technology, withsubjects�concerning neurosonology, pediatric sonography, pathology, andpatient care.�Mr. Penny�is currently the Lead Instructor for the Medical Sonography program at Johnston Community College in Smithfield, NorthCarolina.� He�lives in Garner, North Carolina with his wife andchildren.

All you need for SPI

I recently passed the SPI on my first try. The procrastinator I am, I have been out of school for 5 years, so I had to somewhat "relearn" physics. This book prepared me well. I did purchase two hours of the X-Zone, but that did not seem to help as much. You have to really understand the principles of physics to pass this test, and this book does a good job spelling it all out for you. There are helpful practice exams after each chapter. You also get access to an online practice exam, which I thought was too simplified as compared to the actual registry.

Great Physics Review!!!

This is an awesome review for the SPI exam! I recently took the exam and I studies this book all the way through. It is a very thorough review, but is not overwhelming with the amount of information. It is broken down in an easy to understand manner. It does not over exaggerate the material - it gives you the information you need to know to pass the SPI exam, so you do not waste your time studying tons of information that you never see on your exam. I really feel like this book well prepared me for my SPI exam. I felt as though the information that was on my exam was all covered in this one book. Give it a try!! You will not be disappointed!

helped me excel on the test

I just finished my test this morning and scored 644.

I did not have any guided training for this test and so needed a book that would be fairly comprehensive and yet easy to learn from. This book is about 190 pages or so and is very easy to read. I did not find myself overwhelmed or bored, nor was it too wordy. The diagrams, pictures, etc are all easy to understand and augment the points being made int eh text. The questions at the end of the chapter reinforce the concepts and key points from the chapter; they are slightly easier than the actual examination but it is not a huge difference.

For me at least, this book (read it twice) in conjunction with the ARDMS provided practice tests ($25) and reviewing the semi interactive questions was enough. Things went really quite smoothly.

I will definitely be using Steven Penny's book for the abdomen preparation too.

P. W. Singer is a strategist and senior fellow at the New America Foundation, founder of the technology advisory firm NeoLuddite, the author of multiple award-winning books, and a contributing editor at Popular Science. He has been named by the Smithsonian Institution as one of the 100 leading innovators in the nation.

Allan Friedman is a visiting scholar at the Cyber Security Policy Research Institute in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at George Washington University, where he works on cybersecurity policy. Prior to his time at CSPRI, he was the research director for the Center for Technology Innovation.

Sean Pratt, a working actor for over twenty-five years, has performed at numerous regional theaters around the country. Another great book from Peter Singer

Dr. Singer's books are always engaging, and this book, co-authored Allan Friedman, continues that tradition.

This book is written to be consumed by any thoughtful reader -- it is not a deep dive in UNIX system administration challenges, it not full of computer acronyms, it does not require an advanced degree in computer science.

This book clearly educates the reader about cybersecurity issues, and then expands upon this discussion to enable the reader to conceptualize the challenges of the subject. A good example of this is their Short History of the Internet, which is a clear and concise and enjoyable read by itself. This history includes, in layman's terms, evolution, funding agencies, control entities, architecture, Al Gore, governance, cryptographic keys, and more. With this foundation the authors then expand into many cybersecurity challenges, like WikiLeaks and a variety of security threats.

I particularly liked the discussions on attribution, cybercrimes, and cyber terrorism -- these are not simple issues, and the authors articulate some of the complexities of attribution that make cybersecurity so difficult.

The authors wrap up the book by defining the Five Key Trends that Affect the Future of Cybersecurity – Cloud Computing, Big Data, Mobile, Cyberspace Demographics, and Internet-of-Things (IoT). These trends all increase the problem space of cybersecurity, and the authors define how these trends will drive an even higher demand for security in our future systems.

With this history, description of threats, frameworks, and trends, the authors truly accomplish their goal of delivering a primer of what one needs to know about cybersecurity and cyberwar.

Balanced and Accessible, but Dry At Times

Not too long ago I read the book @War: The Rise of the Military-Internet Complex by Shane Harris, which was a great book and brought home to me the rising influence of private cybersecurity and cyberwarfare interests over the government's internet policies. Though I enjoyed that book a lot, I must admit that it was relatively biased in its coverage. In contrast, this book is a far more balanced look at the issues of cybersecurity and cyberwar. Co-written by P.W. Singer, who wrote Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century one of my favorite books, this book takes a question and answer approach to the topic. For example, a subsection will say something like "What is cybersecurity?" and the authors will spend the next few pages answering the question. In that way it is also a very accessible book for people as you don't need to read the whole book, but rather find the topic(s) you don't quite understand and read about it. This also helps make the book very balanced as it is more about giving readers an exhaustive look at all issues related to cybersecurity and cyberwar. Yet, this also means that it lacks a narrative drive to it. Though the authors try to make the subject more accessible through pop culture anecdotes and illustrations, it still can read like a reference book. Still, if you are interested in this topic, this is probably the fairest and most exhaustive book out there that is most accessible to the public.

Cybersecurity, the Whole Picture

Like most people I was looking for answers to my personal LAN security issues and picked this book in the hopes of getting a deeper understanding of how to secure my network. But, I got an even better deal instead. This book covers the entire state of cyber security issues from car theft by network interference to Cyberwar.

The issue of network security has become global in scope and there are no political boundaries in Cyberspace. Nothing separates us personally from being raided by a thief whether he be an individual using an electronic jamer to keep your car unlocked or an employee of the Chinese government using commercial routers to collect personal data against you.

The misuse and abuse of Cyberspace is predicated on the natural openness of the design of the Ethernet. Education about the current situation is our primary defense against those who would use this valuable tool against us. And this book does an excellent job of appraising us about the dangers and defenses inherent in this communications medium.

This is not a book about how to setup the network security switches on your operating system. This is the book to tell you what has been happening in the entire world of Cyberspace that can affect you directly. Before you can defend yourself you need to know what the threat really is.

Most of the book is spent covering the current world level security threat complex. With the exception of Denial of Service and RoboLensing attacks, the book gives the reader very good advice on how to deny the attackers effective access to your computer network. The general answer lies here.

As in personal self defense, the answer comes through more effective communication with the security community and application of proper security measures. Reducing your threat cross section by using the approaches detailed in the book will help you to protect your data and your sleep.
