Stuart Jaffe has given me back my love of mysteries.

Mystery, suspense, a touch of romance and paranormal action blended perfectly together. The wonderful way local history is woven in and handed to the reader to place you right there. Makes you want to visit, stay at a B&B and go exploring! I really appreciate the way the author stays true to the characters, revealing only enough to suit the story to be told. One can clearly picture a office with Private Eye stenciled on the door, hazy smoke and a beautiful woman (his wife and partner) leaning over his shoulder while he is deep in thought and research. Throw in a humorous ghost of a detective from the 40's and hang for a joyous ride. I look forward to reading more from this author and these wonderful characters he has created.

Mind catching series of books...

Max porter is a great read...these are not the kind of books that keep you glued to the book, unable to put it down, rather, they are the kind that you can't wait to get back to. Humorous, informative, (much local history is interwoven within the story...kind of makes you want to take a ride to North Carolina). You must read the whole set of four books, so far...you will surely enjoy them.

I love the twists and turns in these books, im not really into the history side of any books, I just love the plots, but I have to admit these books do make you keen to absorb the setting. As much as I have loved these first three books ( the four downloaded and ready to go) I am so upset that I'm now reading the last in the series. I will wait, almost patiently, for the next.

The Human Animal Exposed

Desmond Morris wrote this book in 1967 and it is as relevant today as it was then. We are treated to a fascinating, revealing, serious study of human ecology interlaced with humor and insight that only a first rate, dedicated zoologist could provide. Chapters cover our human peculiarities of origin, sex, anatomy, child rearing, exploration/innovation, fighting, feeding, comfort; relations to all other animals and environment; population management or rather, our serious lack of it; and amazingly, even that special peculiarity of humans- language, religion, politics and economics along with insights into the serious lack of efficacy in our endeavors.

This is a true, bare to the bones, scientifically detached observation of the human animal and makes no apologies for "exposing" us in our varied and peculiar habits. An excellent eye-opening read, truly educational and enlightening!

For those who are interested in biology, sociobiology, ecology, etc., will no doubt enjoy what can be seen as a large expansion on Morris' theme in the book: "Mammal in the Mirror" by the daughter and father science team of David and Ilona Barrash. It is truly off-the-charts for a study of us quirky humans.

About the Author
Maggie Parke is completing her doctoral degree at the National Institute for Excellence in the Creative Industries at Bangor University, Wales. She has published in the Journal of Gaming and Virtual Worlds and is the head of development for Elfin Productions. Natalie Wilson pens one of the only academic blogs analyzing Twilight and its cultural impact. She teaches at Cal State San Marcos in the Department of Literature and Writing and in the women's studies program.

Not my cup of tea, loved it anyway

Eight weeks prior to this review, one of my fellow reference librarians received a request via our "Research Consultation Program" (anyone can request an appointment with a librarian for assistance in research). The patron stated they needed "scholarly articles about the Twilight movies and books." We both rolled our eyes and chuckled to each other (in private) then proceeded, in good faith, to help our hapless undergraduate. It's not that topics in popular culture don't receive scholarly treatment, but given that Stephenie Meyer's series was written so recently, 2005 to 2008, and the film versions didn't start until 2008 and won't be complete until late 2012, we weren't confident we'd find much. To our surprise, we did find a couple of critical analyses, mostly in the form of reviews. Fast forward to today.

Maggie Parke and Natalie Wilson have done a fine job of filling the void in scholarly and critical analysis of many things Twilight. The essays are divided into three sections. The first covers the pop cultural aspects surrounding Twilight. Reading the five essays herein reminded me of my earlier days, reviewing a fanzine called "The Picardian" which attempted to cover, and deconstruct, all things Jean Luc Picard (see Star Trek: The Next Generation).

The thrust of the second five essays falls under traditional literary criticism and analysis. Comparisons with Wuthering Heights and modern teen fiction are well written and, dare I say it? INTERESTING!

The final five essays focus on the social and anthropological aspects of the Twilight universe. Discussions of "heteronormative patriarchy" stand along side musing about the "Noble Savage" and "Genesis, Gender, and Gynocide."

This book should be a no brainer purchase for public libraries, and academic libraries that can back down from snobbery ("But, but, but, it's just about TWILIGHT, dang it!") could also benefit from our experience that there will be a demand for this book (and I know that anecdote is not evidence).

Parents could consider purchasing this for their Fans of Twilight offspring. Think of this work as a stealthy introduction to a younger generation about the joys of quality critical analysis, deconstruction, and the analysis of pop culture.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars because, despite NOT being a fan of the Twilight books or movies, I loved this collection.

Expanded "Where's Waldo" theme

My children enjoy this book, but only for short periods, and personally I am not a big fan of the rather 'sloppily' drawn style of pictures. I know this is done on purpose, but it's just not clear enough to hold the attention of kids for long. The colors are somewhat dull and don't do justice to the merry theme and goings on in the illustrations. Otherwise it's a nice challenge for young children to tell items apart and find them amidst the chaos.
